Winema Lodge
Local Sites & Activities

The most popular activity people take part in during their stay at Winema Lodge is to just sit back and relax. We have a comfortable living room, pool table, yard and games. No phones make it a great place to get away from it all and enjoy yourself. You can watch wildlife from out the window or sitting in the yard.

Hiking, swimming, bicycling, canoeing, hunting, birding, caving, golf, and other activities can be found either on our grounds or a short scenic drive away. Verna will pack you a lunch on request.

Indian Camp Golf Course, located 10 miles north of Winema Lodge, is a short nine hole course offering a great view of the Klamath Basin located at the border of California and Oregon. The course was built on rolling terrain and features extremely undulating greens. This is a good course for both beginners and experienced golfers who wish to work on their short game.

Birding Page: Winema Lodge is in the heart of the Pacific Flyway, the most important migratory bird location on the West Coast. 498 species of wildlife live in the Klamath Basin, and our lodge is right in the midst of the habitat by farmland and wildlife refuges. Klamath Basin has the largest concentration of waterfowl in North America, bringing bird watchers to stay at the lodge, which is seconds from the Tule Lake National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. Birds, deer herds, coyotes, bunnies and lizards come right outside (hopefully outside) the lodge windows.

For family fun, the Lava Beds National Monument is only 15 minutes away.  This is the site of the last Indian war in America, the Modoc War. There are trails, caves, campgrounds, historical sites, wildlife, educational programs, and a visitors center. Some trails are open for horseback riding (bring your own horse). The Petroglyphs is 20 miles from the lodge, with Indian carving on the rock formation. A trail takes you to the top for a view of the south Tulelake Basin.

Medicine Lake is only a half hour drive from Winema Lodge (with some dirt roads). Here is a beautiful pine forest and crystal clear lake stocked with trout. There is water skiing, campgrounds (with no hookups), canoeing, bicycling, kayaking, and fishing. Winter sports include snowmobiling, snow shoeing, and cross country skiing. Bring your own rv or tent, boat and food. A sandy beach is roped off for swimming and sun bathing.

The Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Museum of Local History is located on Tulelake's Main Street. Experience the unique histories of Tulelake, Butte Valley, Merrill & Malin as you listen to an audio tape tour. There are exhibits including Modoc Indians, reclamation, wars, WWII Japanese relocation camp, homesteading, and more. It is open 9 am - 4:30 pm weekdays, and weekends by appointment. Phone 530 667 5312, or visit www.tbvfair.com .The 2006 county fair will be September 6-10th.

Bicycling: There are several roads, trails, and attractions you can visit starting from here with a bicycle, including farmland, Tulelake Wildlife Refuge, Tulelake, and Medicine Lake.
